What made it special? Consider its name: World War 1. It was the first time all the major powers were simultaneously at war.

Did the WT totally "luck out" with World War I starting in 1914?
by lepermessiah inmy family is still fixated on the 1914 date, simply because world war i started that year.. i told them i will agree it is a significant year in world history, but that the 1914 date as presented by jw's is based on lies and charlatanry.. i said "i think the wt really lucked out with 1914 with wwi starting that year - it keeps most jw's stuck on that date" .
the standard answer is "well, that was the year everything went haywire"...... let the circular reasoning continue .

War in Europe had been feared since before the turn of the century.
Undercover makes a valid point. JWs write that war was unexpected and cherry-pick historical quotes regarding those who were hoping to create a Utopian society. They do this to try to bolster the concept that war was unexpected>therefore God must have caused it>therefore JWs must have had divine, special, advance knowledge.
However, war WAS expected. That is why European countries were furiously entering into mutual aid agreements with each other, and those multiple agreements are what pulled the world into war. Country A was attacked by Country Z. Country B had an agreement to support Country A, so they declare war on Z. Country Y has an agreement to support Country Z. When Country B declares war on Z as a result of its attack on A, Country Y has to get involved..etc...etc...
JWs do not quite know HOW to respond when I explain this to them and they discover that the WHOLE WORLD was expecting, and actively preparing, for war.

A bit of an article from Radio Free Europe: http://www.rferl.org/content/Fear_For_Iranian_Woman_Facing_Death_By_Stoning_/2075376.html
A lawyer and activist close to the case of an Iranian woman convicted of adultery say she may soon be stoned to death, RFE/RL's Radio Farda reports.
Women's rights activist Soheila Vahdati spoke to Radio Farda on June 17 about the case of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani. Ashtiani, who has two children, has been imprisoned in the northwestern Iranian city of Tabriz since 2005.
Vahdati says Sakineh was earlier sentenced to 99 lashes in 2006 for having "illicit relationships." The sentence was subsequently carried out and her case was closed.
But authorities later charged Ashtiani with murder. Prosecutors alleged that Ashtiani and her boyfriend had killed her husband.
In making the murder case against Ashtiani, activist Vahdati says the court "illegally" reopened the adultery case against Ashtiani. It was the second time Ashtiani would be tried for the same alleged adulterous conduct.
According to Vahdati, Ashtiani was sentenced to be stoned to death for the same alleged act of adultery for which she earlier had been convicted to 99 lashes. It is not clear when she was sentenced.
While denying the charges against her, Ashtiani has asked the authorities for a pardon. -

witnesses called at our door when i was nearly 11. my parents are deaf and i was the oldest hearing child, the default interpreter for them in that era before relay services and professional interpreters.
they had no interest in jws, but it started to spark an interest in me.

What an excellent thread. :) One of the things I did "right" while "in" was to encourage my children to pursue higher education. I was born-in and always struggled to blend; being a JW was not a good fit for me, and I did not want my daughter's to live my life. One daughter is a senior financial analyst for Amazon.com and the other just graduated law school and will be working for the San Diego prosecutors office.
When they loosened the rules in the 1990s, I obtained an associate's degree, and I obtained work as a paralegal. It is amazing how much my income increased with that piece of paper. After my daughters' educational needs were taken care of, I then went back to school.
Just this month, I obtained my bachelor's degree. In addition, this fall I will be attending law school.
Taking the LSAT at 50 years of age and openly and actively competing against 20-nothing year olds for a law school seat was intimidating; the LSAT and the MCAT are, by design, mind altering tests. But I more than held my own. :) I was accepted to several law schools, and the school I am attending offered me a half-ride scholarship ($16,000 per year).
I think pursuing education made my split with JWs incredibly easy. I walked out of a KH and into a classroom...didn't miss a beat or spend any time bemoaning the 'wasted years.' My best recommendation is to not look back. You absolutely cannot get those years back; they are gone. All you can do is make better use of your future years.

While denying the charges against her, Ashtiani has asked the authorities for a pardon.
According to activist Vahdati, Ashtiani told the authorities, "if I have done any wrong, I repent."
Her clemency request was rejected.
Lawyer Mohammad Mostafaie, who represents Ashtiani, also maintains her innocence. Writing on his personal blog, the lawyer described Ashtiani's stoning as imminent and said his client will be executed "for an offense she has not committed."
According to Article 83 of the Laws of Islamic Punishment in Iran, ratified in 1991, the penalty for adultery is death by stoning.
However, murder is not punishable in Iran by stoning. Murderers who receive the death sentence are hanged.
http://www.rferl.org/content/Fear_For_Iranian_Woman_Facing_Death_By_Stoning_/2075376.html Petition: The Islamic Republic of Iran is enforcing the brutal and savage anti human punishments against the people of Iran, including stoning to death of men and women. This is an urgent matter, and stoning to death of Sakineh is imminent.
We ask United Nations, European Union, Human Rights Organizations to take urgent action, to save Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani who has been imprisoned in the northwestern Iranian city of Tabriz since 2005. Sakineh was earlier sentenced to 99 lashes in 2006 for having "illicit relationships." The sentence was subsequently carried out and her case was closed. From betterdaze:
The incident happened at Martin Luther King Jr. Way South near the arterial's intersection with Rainier Avenue South, in the vicinity of Franklin High School.
A Seattle transportation department plan released in 2006 called for Seattle police pedestrian-safety patrols to target jaywalking, particularly near Franklin High and north of South McClellan Street by the Lowe's hardware store.
Between 2002 and 2006 more jaywalkers were hit by vehicles on Rainier Avenue South than in any other corridor in the city.
During that period, 61 pedestrians were struck while jaywalking on Rainier Avenue South -- nearly double the number of accidents on Aurora Avenue North, which had the second highest number of jaywalkers hit with 35, according to Seattle Transportation Department records.
Also during that period, 23 other jaywalkers were hit in the South End, on Martin Luther King Jr. Way South and on Beacon Avenue South. Those roads also accounted for 126 pedestrian accidents at intersections.
There were six jaywalking accidents on Aurora Avenue North in the several blocks south of North 125th Street between 2002 and 2006, tying that short stretch of roadway with Rainier Avenue South between South Hudson Street and 39th Avenue South for the highest number of jaywalking collisions in the city.

James Kelly, chief executive officer of the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattleduring a news conference Tuesday with African-American community leaders, called Walsh's punch an overreaction. "The provocation by this 17-year-old kid may have presented a confrontation situation, but the use of violence in the form of a full punch in the face was just plain wrong," he said in a statement...Kelly said he wanted to be clear that what the 17-year-old girl had done Monday was wrong and that her actions "only helped escalate an already tense situation. ... I am making no excuses for her. But two wrongs don't make a right."
Watch the black leaders speaking on video and you tell me how balanced they sound.
